This position is responsible for analyzing and evaluating consumer home loan applications as well as the supporting documentation to assess Borrower’s creditworthiness. Types of consumer loan applications include, but are not limited to Conventional, Jumbo, FHA, VA, and USDA residential first mortgages. Must be able to recommend approval or denial of credit applications, and provide written and verbal decision and documentation to support the lending decision.


Responsible for assisting the Senior Underwriters in set-up and review of residential loan file documents. May sign off on underwriting conditions that are both non-credit and credit-qualifying, depending upon lending authority.
Must comply with all BSA/AML requirements as well as any mandatory changes. The following job functions are not all-inclusive. The associate will be required to perform other job-related tasks/responsibilities requested by the manager.  Job duties may change as required by needs of company.  Must complete all required industry and compliance training as required by Plaza Home Mortgage.
  1. Identifies, researches, and resolves technical problems.
  2. Knowledge of FNMA, and FMLMC documentation and general guidelines/standards.
  3. Experience with FHA, VA and USDA is preferred, but not required.
  4. Proficiency with DU/DO, LP, FHA Connection, and USDA GUS also preferred, but not required.
  5. May sign off on underwriting conditions within authority (lending authority to be approved by Corporate Underwriting).
  6. Perform accurate data validation of file and update system of record, certifying system data integrity.
  7. Acts as a liaison by communicating loan decision and conditions to CSRs, Brokers and Correspondent clients.
  8. Review government insuring disclosures.
  9. Run and review quality control tools –i.e. FraudGard and Early Check
  10. Run credit as required.
  11. May test for and receive Level I/II underwriting authority for the following tasks:
    • Perform mortgage credit analysis, with or without the assistance of an AUS system for conventional loans, to determine borrower’s willingness and ability to repay the mortgage.
    • Review credit documents for completeness and accuracy.
    • Perform detailed review of appraisal for one-to-four family residential properties to determine acceptability of security for sale to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as loans sold to investors.
    • Partner with sales team to ensure mortgage applications are originated efficiently and in compliance with all Plaza Home Mortgage regulatory requirements, especially as it pertains to underwriting.
  12. Complete required worksheets –i.e Pre Closing Checklist
  13. Assist in resolving branch post closing investor suspense issues
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; College degree preferred
  • Previous Underwriting experience required to be eligible for Level I underwriting authority
  • Good grasp of basic underwriting documentation and the qualifying requirements
  • Experience with (AUS) automated underwriting systems
  • Time management and organization skills essential to effectively prioritize multiple objectives and achieve volume goals
  • Familiarity with Loan Origination Systems such as DataTrac and NetOxygen
  • Knowledge of paperless file environment and image software repository
  • Proficiency with computer systems including MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook), Internet Browsers, and email functions required
