Under supervision of the Nurse Manager (RN) and with the collaboration of the program director, the License Practical Nurse (LPN) will coordinate the implementations of medication dispensing in the Opioid Treatment Program for clients which can include various assisted treatment medications such as methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, and naloxone in the OTP dispensing unit.  The LPN will practice such skills as vital sign assessment, Tuberculin implanting, and phlebotomy in the program clinic setting. He/she will be required to collaborate with members of the behavioral health and medical team and other leadership the development, management, and operations of the OTP and will operate under the department philosophy, standards of practice, and policy.
The Dispensary Nurse is responsible for the safe and efficient dispensing of doses of methadone to clients, consistent with the clinic procedures. The nature of this position is fast-paced in high stress situations and conditions
KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:                                                                                                                          
  • Adhere and dispense appropriate methadone dosages, in accordance with clinic procedures and guidelines according to DEA, OASAS, SAMSHA, and DOH regulations.
  • Detail inventory maintenance and reporting with computations according to each tour
  • Maintain daily reports for accountability of daily dispensing activities such as calibration, spillage, compliance, and swapping of inventory.
  • Perform nursing assessment during each medication dispensed for each client to identify alertness and orientation.
  • Computer skills essential as methadone medication is dispensed via computer system
  • Perform technical skills such as vital signs, phlebotomy, and various lab collection procedures according to CLIA guidelines, during nursing assessments and evaluations for intakes, client visits, annual evaluations and routine crisis basis.
  • Implement nursing care effectively and with courtesy according to clinic policy and procedures
  • Assists physicians and other employees as needed.
  • Adhere and maintain security of dispensing area and inventory and report any diversion to immediate nursing supervisor.
  • Follow accepted standards of nursing practice in providing direct care, performing procedures, and using equipment. Ensures that the findings of the nursing assessment, the comprehensive care plan, and recommendations for nursing follow-up are documented dated, and signed in the client’s record
  • Maintains accurate documentation of daily methadone dispensing log.
  • Assesses clients at the time of intake, and then on an on-going basis. If new medical or nursing needs are apparent, communicates these to the client’s primacy counselor/ medical director.
  • Coordinates all necessary client services with other interdisciplinary team members in the comprehensive care planning process
  • Maintains accurate documentation of all nursing activities
  • As a part of the initial evaluation and the 90-day reassessment, reviews client’s medical history including medication
  • With the Medical Director, maintains adequate infection control standards
  • Ensures the provision and coordination of staff teaching regarding prevention, transmission, risk reduction and risk elimination strategies for HIV/AIDS
  • Carries out established policies and procedures for medication and treatment administration
  • Upon admission and at annual examination, placing PPD, reading PPD's within the appropriate time frame and documenting in client's chart.
  • Providing educational health related materials at admission, and as needed or requested by client or as medically/clinically indicated.
Educational Requirement:
  • High School Diploma or GED in an equivalent related field required.
  • Graduate of accredited Nursing School.
  • Current and unrestricted License registration in NYS as a Licensed Practical Nurse required.
  • Experience working in an addiction setting required. 
  • NARCAN certified
  • BLS/CPR certification is required.
  • Infection Control Certification (approved by NYSED or NYSDOH, 3.0-4.0 Hours)
  • Ability to use business acumen to exercise good judgment and decision-making.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues with diplomacy and discretion.
  • Must be able to multi task with strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and able to communicate both verbally and in written form.
