The Office of Legal Affairs is looking for someone to assist the Deputy Counsel for Litigation (DCL) and Deputy Counsel for Compliance (DCC).  The paralegal will help DCL with all aspects of daily litigation tasks and assist DCC with subpoena demands and responses. The position reports directly to the DCL and will involve working on an array of legal matters and legal disputes across multiple areas of law.
You will also assist with the preparation and tracking of litigation, and maintain the litigation log, reports, and calendars.

  • New York State Department of Education (DOE)
  • Department for the Aging (DFTA)
  • Administration for Children’s Services (ACS)
  • Office of Court Administration
  • New York City Commission on Human Rights
  • New York State Division on Human Rights
  • EEOC filings and responses
  • Legal research - knowledge of LEXIS is a plus.
  • Drafting of pleadings, discovery, and other documents.
  • Assist in organizing and collecting documents for document productions and subpoenas, including searching for, reviewing, numbering, redacting, and preparing the documents for production (under the guidance of an attorney). 
  • Obtaining and reviewing medical records and familiarity with HIPAA rules.
  • State and Federal Courts’ rules and procedures, including electronic filings.
  • Organize and maintain internal litigation files, including electronic files for correspondence, pleadings, discovery documents, and witness interview notes.
  • Aid in gathering information internally to respond to discovery requests.
  • Prepare summaries of new matters for Acacia Network’s insurers.
  • Maintain and search Acacia Network’s internal case trackers and databases, as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between Office of Legal Affairs and outside law firms, as needed.
  • Assist in tracking and preparing litigation and claims charts for Acacia Network’s auditors.
  • Performing administrative duties (calendar hearings and deadlines, etc.), as needed.
  • Microsoft Word, Outlook.
  • Fluency in Spanish (spoken and written) is a plus.
  • Must be organized and self-motivated.
  • BA/BS degree required, paralegal certificate preferred.
  • 5-7 years of relevant work experience.

  • Working knowledge of healthcare requirements including Medicaid, Medicare, and HIPAA.
  • Demonstrate good judgment and decision-making.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues with diplomacy and discretion.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and able to communicate both verbally and in written form
