Our client, a dynamic and rapidly growing private equity real estate investment firm with a national footprint is seeking a talented Associate Counsel to join its in-house legal team at its Albany, NY area headquarters. The firm specializes in self-storage and other alternative real estate asset classes, with a multi-billion-dollar portfolio spanning the United States, Canada, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

 

This is an exceptional opportunity for a motivated environmental attorney to play a key role in the acquisition, financing, and operation of commercial real estate while working alongside a highly collaborative and respected leadership team.

 

Responsibilities of the Associate Counsel will include:

  • Advise on federal, state, and local environmental regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Oversee environmental due diligence for real estate acquisitions and financings.
  • Review and interpret environmental reports (e.g., Phase I/II ESAs), property condition reports, title, and survey documents.
  • Work with outside counsel and consultants to structure, negotiate, and close commercial real estate transactions.
  • Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments related to environmental law.
  • Prepare, draft, and review contracts, permits, regulatory filings, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research and provide clear, actionable guidance on environmental and compliance matters.
  • Support general corporate and operational legal needs, including policies, agreements, and litigation matters as assigned.

 

 
Job Requirements

 

Qualifications of the Associate Counsel:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state, with eligibility to practice in New York.
  • 3–5 years of experience practicing environmental law, ideally with exposure to real estate transactions and land use.
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental regulatory frameworks at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills with sharp attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Collaborative and solutions-oriented with a proven ability to build strong internal and external relationships.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

 

Pay for this position is commensurate with experience and education, ranging roughly from $120,000 - $140,000.
