Specialized Software Developer (APL) - Life Insurance

Location: Remote (U.S.)
Pay Range: $83 - $89/hour W2

Alphanumeric is hiring a Specialized Software Developer (APL) to work remotely with an established organization with a strong presence in the financial services and insurance industries.

This role will support the modernization of legacy actuarial and policy administration systems. The ideal candidate will bring deep hands-on APL development experience, strong life insurance domain expertise, and the ability to analyze, stabilize, and enhance complex legacy systems while supporting migration to a modernized platform.

This position is critical to maintaining existing APL-based policy administration and illustration tools while helping transition life insurance product functionality to next-generation systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance PC-based APL applications supporting life insurance policy administration and illustration tools
  • Analyze and refactor complex legacy APL codebases to improve stability, performance, and maintainability
  • Support the modernization and migration of life insurance products and functionality to a modern platform
  • Collaborate with actuarial, business, and engineering teams to ensure accurate policy calculations and system behavior
  • Perform code reviews, debugging, testing, and documentation for legacy systems
  • Assist in translating legacy APL functionality into modern system architectures

 
Job Requirements

 

Required Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on experience with APL development (PC-based environments)
  • Life insurance industry experience, particularly with policy administration or illustration systems
  • Experience working with legacy system modernization or migration initiatives
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess and stabilize complex legacy code
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, distributed environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SQL
  • Experience with VBA
  • Exposure to actuarial systems, insurance product modeling, or illustration tools
